Guidance

An advisor can help you build (and stick to) a financial plan. Think of them like a personal trainer for your finances.

They can give you information, explain the pros and cons of different approaches when you’re trying to make a big decision, highlight anything you’re missing and they can build forecasts e.g. when you can retire.

They can help you make better decisions but they won’t suggest you make a particular decision like investing in a particular fund, because that counts as advice.

Advice normally works out to thousands of pounds a year so our guidance service is our way to give 80% of the value of having an advisor for 20% of the cost.

Advice

A few levels up from guidance. Rather than just explaining what you can do, an advisor can suggest what they think you should do. They can basically take the decision off your hands.

One of the main advantages of getting advice is that advisors can suggest specific products (like which fund to invest in) and they can manage your money, if you want.

You can either get one-off advice or ongoing advice. The fee depends on the advisor and circumstances but advice costs a lot more than guidance because the work is a lot more involved, in part thanks to the regulations.

The choice between the two comes down to how much money you have as well as your attitude to managing your money - would you like to do it or have someone else do it for you?

Advice can be more suitable than guidance in the following situations:

  1. If you’re approaching retirement

  2. If you have complex finances

  3. If you’ve come into a lump sum

  4. If you have >£250k in investable assets
